Diana Ross Circa 1970 Is Very on Trend for Right Now

We’ve become quite enamoured with vintage images of Diana Ross lately. The original soul diva has a style file bursting with inspiration for the trends we’re currently most interested in. Whether she was styling out her glossy shoulder-length bob and matching evening dresses with The Supremes or epitomising glamour in her off-duty style, her looks around the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s are well worth referencing.
Diana has always had an unapologetic penchant for OTT looks, but it was when the Detroit-born superstar released her eponymous debut solo album in 1970 that she really stepped into her (exuberant) personal style groove. Her first solo performances were accompanied by some serious fashion. Legendary designer Bob Mackie (the man behind some of Cher’s most iconic looks) made a number of our favourite Diana outfits. Think sequinned jumpsuits and ultra-luxe gowns.
It didn’t surprise us to learn that the Motown singer had once wanted to be a fashion designer (she later designed costumes for the film Mahogany, in which she starred). And it would appear the sharp eye for style runs in the family. Diana’s daughter, actress Tracee Ellis Ross, has risen the fore as a fashion muse over the past year or so with her bold looks, smart words and sense of humour on social media. We knew she must have got that killer dress sense from somewhere…
